Amorphous silica is a poor heat conductor and its low solids content resists solid phase conductivity. As the pore sizes are smaller than the mean free path of air it also prevents gas phaseconductivity. When used to insulate a cavity it also prevents convection currents. It is the only insulation, which will perform better than air. Its translucent nature also allows high levels of light to be transmitted. The porous structure also slows down the speed of sound - reducing noise transmission.
