Dyer Associates designed the bright and spacious Stevenage Building at North Hertfordshire College. The new 80,000 sq ft state of the art education facility provides an environment that promotes interactive learning and North Hertfordshire College with a facility suitable for the new technologies of the 21st Century.
The focal point in the main atrium of the building is a large curved glazed pod, which spans over two floors, is made up of a combination of straight and five curved sections of differing radii. The normal limit for curved internal screens is approximately 2.00m. On this project the Profilit™ glass was facetted into curved aluminium with a radius of 1.4m using a specially adapted aluminium frame.
The architect chose to use two different glass types, the SP26 standard cast with 8 wires and SP26 Clear with 8 wires. These were used in a random pattern to create a distinct bar-code effect, as illustrated above. This provided areas of obscure glazing and clear vision panels creating a dramatic feature.
