NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY

Commissioned by the University to produce a single storey 410 seat lecture theatre for the Medical School's Department of Psychology, locally based Architect FaulknerBrowns conceived a bold design raised on steel columns above the existing entrance to the medical and dental schools.

The ProfilitTM glazing system has been used extensively by the architect to create a dramatic visual effect to the exterior of the theatre, whilst ensuring functionality by maintaining excellent light transmission and privacy. The ProfilitTM comprises translucent cast glass 'planks' fitted into an extruded perimeter frame to offer a simple, yet structurally rigid and aesthetically stunning building element. Within the scheme it was utilised for both the external cladding of the lecture theatre, and the creation of an internal glazed 'light box' within the reception area.
