At the new Airbus Factory at Broughton in North Wales, it was the architect’s desire to allow as much natural light as possible into the cavernous production halls. This was achieved by incorporating the Pilkington Profilit™ system. The largest factory to be built in the UK for the past 20 years utilised over 2,300m2 of Profilit™ which not only allows an abundance of natural light into the building by day, but also enables the building to glow by night.

The architect chose to use SP26 cast wired double glazed for the 37.5m high horizontally glazed screens – a height equivalent to a 12 storey building. Due to the unique shape of Profilit™, the horizontally glazed screens were constructed without any additional intermediate supports. This continuous ribbon of Profilit™ ensures that uninterrupted light floods into the building, achieving the architects’ desire for a bright and spacious workspace.
